9 Shocking foods that have plastic in

There's no denying, plastic is everywhere - but did you know it's in your food too? Until last week, I didn't know the shocking truths of how plastic is literally in everything.

So I did some research into which foods contain plastic, and this is that I found.

1) Fruit and veg

Researchers at a University in Italy discovered tiny plastic particles in things like lettuce, broccoli, potatoes, and pears.

It is thought that because microplastics get picked up in the clouds and fall back down when it rains, they then will be absorbed into plants roots.

Apples had one of the highest microplastic counts in fruit, with an average of 195,500 plastic particles per gram

2) Meat and dairy

If plastic finds its way into fruit and vegetables, this will be digested in animals and go into their produce like meat and dairy

3) Salt.

According to a 2018 study of 39 salt brands sampled from 21 countries, over 90% contained microplastics.

Microplastics enter oceans because they are too small for filtering or screening during sewage treatment.

4) Tea bags

Did you know that as of 2018 over 95% of tea bags contain plastic?

Plastic is used in the sealing for most tea bags. This also means they are not compostable.

5) Honey

19 different types of honey were studied across a wide area and it was found that ALL of them contained plastic fibres

6) Tinned foods

Most cans are lined with a chemical called BPA. This plastic leaches into the contents of the food and is linked with serious health problems.

7) Ready meals

Ready meals often are in some sort of plastic packaging so this plastic may get into the food during the production of the ready meal or when the meal is heated up.

8) Fish and seafood

Because the ocean is filled with microplastics, they are also now in pretty much all fish and seafood.

9) Beer

The latest study detected microplastics in 12 different US beer brands which used water from water sources such as Lake Superior and Lake Michigan.

And finally, because plastic can be floating round your house (that has come off from clothes etc) - Plastic could be in all your food.
